President Richard Lawrence - VISION Statement for 2007 - 2008

At his inauguration on 3 July 2007, new President for year 73 of the Rotary Club of Essendon Richard Lawrence gave a rousing induction speech which began by paying tribute to Roger Leask who held this title for the previous year. He thanked Roger for his leadership and enthusiasm during his presidency, and then set about exploring his vision for the new Rotary year.

Richard began by encouraging members to look inside themselves for the strength and enthusiasm to pursue good deeds such as fundraising to help the needy and developing leadership programs for young people. Richard extrapolated his vision by describing two new initiatives that he plans to pursue,
the first called the ‘Career Talk to Schools’ Program, and the second involving community work with the disadvantaged who live in the Flemington High Rise area.

The Career Talk to Schools program aims to round up experienced Rotarians (such as yourselves) who have established themselves in careers and are able to talk to local schools and TAFE colleges about what their career paths have been and what drove them to success.

The second initiative will be recognized in conjunction with the Victoria Police in Flemington, and will involve working to establish meaningful and helpful relationships with the Flemington High Rise community in this area. With a little help in areas such as literacy, personal direction and confidence, this initiative aims to bring brighter futures to those currently less fortunate.

Richard noted that these projects will not be burdened with a high financial cost, but they will require a little time and effort from Rotarians, as such, volunteers are always welcome. Richard completed his speech by imploring that Rotary members attend meetings, stressing that success can only be achieved through participation – and current attendance levels are depleting enthusiasm which must be kept high for this new and exciting Rotary year.
